The Nissan R35 GT-R is set to end production after 18 years on sale – and four years after the Japanese supercar was axed from Nissan’s Australian line-up.

A note on Nissan’s Japanese website confirmed the company was no longer accepting orders for the all-wheel-drive GT-R.

“We have received many orders for the Nissan GT-R, and we have now finished accepting orders for the planned production quantity,” the company wrote.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our many customers for their patronage over the years since its release in 2007.”

While the R35 GT-R entered production in Japan in late 2007 – being the first GT-R to drop the Skyline name – it was April 2009 when Australian buyers eventually got their hands on the high-performance coupe.

The R35 was also the first GT-R to move from an inline-six engine to a V6 configuration, with the 3.8-litre twin-turbo debuting with 357kW and 588Nm, making it the most powerful Japanese production vehicle at the time.

Each engine was hand-built by five specialist mechanics, with their names badged on every unit produced – while every GT-R that came off the production line was tested by a professional Nissan driver around the company’s test track before being shipped around the world.

The most powerful version of the R35 was the GT-R50 – wearing an updated exterior by Italian design studio Italdesign – with the vehicle created to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of both Italdesign and the GT-R.

Just 19 were made, with the engine from the GT-R Nismo tuned from 447kW and 652Nm to 530kW and 780Nm.

Despite Nissan playing coy, it’s widely believed the Hyper Force concept (above) shown at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show was a preview of the next-generation GT-R, with the concept said to make 1000kW from multiple electric motors.
