Nissan has unveiled a plug-in hybrid variant of the Rogue SUV – the North American cousin of the X-Trail – but it isn’t based on the version of the brand’s mid-sized SUV sold in Australia. 

Since 2013, the Rogue and the X-Trail have been identical models. However, the new plug-in hybrid variant breaks that trend, as it is instead a rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. 

From launch, it will be available in two trim levels: an entry-level SL model and a higher-spec Platinum model grade. 

Like the plug-in hybrid Outlander before its recent update, the new Rogue PHEV features a 2.4-litre petrol engine, two electric motors, all-wheel drive, and a 20kWh Lithium-Ion battery. The powertrain has a combined system output of 185kW.

The new Rogue has an electric-only range of 61km on the strict North American EPA cycle, and has a claimed total driving range of 676km. 

Visually, save for the grille and rear light design, the plug-in hybrid Nissan Rogue and the Mitsubishi Outlander are essentially identical.

This trend continues on the interior, where you’ll find the same nine-inch infotainment touchscreen (from the pre-update Outlander), 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dashboard, drive mode selector, and steering wheel design featured on its Mitsubishi counterpart. 

In Australia, the Nissan X-Trail e-Power variants are offered with a series hybrid powertrain, but this is not currently an option on the North American Rogue lineup.

The Outlander-based Rogue PHEV is set to arrive in North American dealerships in 2026. 

So far, the Rogue PHEV has only been confirmed for the North American market, with Nissan yet to announce plans to release a version of the model in Australia or in any other overseas markets.
