Jaecoo J7 PHEV to Launch in Australia with 1,200km Range
The Jaecoo J7 PHEV, arriving in Q1, 2025, claims a 1,200km range and will enter Australia’s competitive plug-in hybrid SUV segment.
The Jaecoo J7 PHEV, featuring the Super Hybrid System (SHS), is set to arrive in Australia in early 2025. The vehicle offers a claimed combined driving range of up to 1,200km and a pure electric range of 90km (WLTP), placing it in the competitive plug-in hybrid SUV segment.
The SHS system in the J7 PHEV integrates a 1.5TDGI hybrid engine, a stepless hybrid transmission (DHT), and a hybrid battery. According to Jaecoo, the 1.5TDGI engine achieves a thermal efficiency of 44.5% and is designed to optimise fuel usage based on driving conditions. The DHT transmission supports four driving modes, including pure electric and parallel hybrid, which aim to enhance efficiency during both low-speed urban commutes and high-speed highway travel.
The J7’s high-performance battery is equipped with safety measures, including rapid-response power-off functionality in the event of a collision. Jaecoo has stated that the battery is designed to handle the demands of Australian environments, offering features such as waterproofing and impact resistance.
In terms of range, the J7 PHEV’s claimed 1,200km combined range places it slightly ahead of competitors like the BYD Sealion 6, which offers 1,092km according to manufacturer data. However, other factors such as real-world efficiency, pricing, and interior features may play a significant role in the J7’s market positioning.
Jaecoo has not yet disclosed the full interior and feature set for the J7 PHEV. It will compete in a segment that includes the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and BYD Sealion 6. For reference, the BYD Sealion 6 starts at $48,990 for the Dynamic model, while the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV begins at $57,290. Pricing and additional specifications for the Jaecoo J7 PHEV will be confirmed closer to its Q1, 2025 launch.
