Breaking: Toyota Reveals New Mini LandCruiser FJ to Rival Suzuki Jimny
Toyota reveals the 2026 LandCruiser FJ, a compact off-roader built to rival the Suzuki Jimny and Renault Duster launching in Japan mid-2026.
Toyota has unveiled the new LandCruiser FJ, a compact off-roader set to join the brand’s long-running 4WD family when it launches in Japan around mid-2026.
The FJ sits beneath the LandCruiser 250, 300 and 70 Series models, and has been designed as a smaller, more affordable ladder-frame SUV positioned to compete with vehicles like the Suzuki Jimny and Renault Duster.
Measuring 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,960 mm tall, the FJ is similar in size to a RAV4 but rides on a much shorter 2,580 mm wheelbase.
It uses a version of Toyota’s IMV platform shared with the HiLux and features a part-time four-wheel drive system.
Power comes from a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 120 kW and 246 Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
While this setup mirrors the HiLux Workmate’s petrol drivetrain, Toyota has not yet confirmed whether diesel or hybrid versions are planned.
Exterior styling takes inspiration from the previous FJ Cruiser, with a boxy profile, flared guards and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
Both the front and rear bumpers are split into replaceable sections, allowing for easier repair after off-road use.
Inside, the FJ adopts a simple, horizontal dashboard layout with large physical controls, a digital display, and Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance technology. Five seats are fitted as standard.
Toyota says the FJ has wheel articulation comparable to the LandCruiser 70 Series, supported by extra under-floor bracing and a shorter turning radius of 5.5 metres.
The new LandCruiser FJ will make its public debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo from October 30 to November 9, ahead of production starting in 2026.
Toyota Australia has not confirmed local availability at this time.
