Toyota Introduces Five-Speed Manual Gearbox for LandCruiser 70 Series
6 min read

Toyota has expanded its LandCruiser 70 Series range by introducing a five-speed manual transmission option for select models, including the Double Cab-Chassis, Troop Carrier, and GXL Wagon variants. This addition, priced from $77,200 (for the 78 Series Troop Carrier WorkMate), complements the existing six-speed automatic transmission and is paired with the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, delivering 150kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

The new manual transmission features tailored gear ratios, with shorter first, second, and third gears to enhance start-off performance, and a longer fifth gear to improve fuel efficiency and reduce engine noise at highway speeds. A triple synchronisation mechanism has been added to the first gear for smoother shifting, and a new flywheel compatible with a 12-inch clutch ensures better power delivery. Additionally, a dust seal on the rear end plate aims to prevent foreign matter from entering the release bearing.

This development follows Toyota's decision to discontinue the 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine for the LandCruiser 70 Series, a powertrain that had been in use since 2007. Production of V8 models such as the Wagon, Troop Carrier, and WorkMate and GX pick-ups ceased in September 2024, with final deliveries expected late this year or early next year. Production of the V8-powered 79 Series GXL single and double cabs will continue into 2025 to meet existing customer demand, with final deliveries anticipated by the last quarter of that year.

Addressing customer feedback, Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, stated: 'When we discontinued the V8 LandCruiser 70 Series earlier this year, we know there were some customers lamenting the absence of a manual gearbox in the range, so we wanted to ensure we were able to offer all our customers a range of powertrain options and this new manual fits the bill perfectly.'

The LandCruiser 70 Series has been a significant model in Australia since 1985, with over 340,000 units sold, nearly half of which were V8-powered models. The new manual transmission is expected to support the vehicle's renowned off-road and heavy-duty capabilities, continuing its legacy as a durable and reliable workhorse.
