The Mazda 2 has been quietly replaced by a rebadged Toyota Yaris Hybrid in the UK, but the model remains safe in Australia – for now.

Mazda’s local arm has confirmed to CarSauce there are no similar plans to drop the current Mazda 2 for a hybrid city model sourced from Toyota.

According to magazine Autocar, the Mazda 2 – the same model currently on sale in Australia – has been available in the UK market for almost a decade.

However, while the vehicle is made with mild-hybrid engines, Mazda UK has opted to focus solely on the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-based model, which has been available to European markets since 2022 – badged as a Mazda 2.

“As we move towards increased electrification of our cars, the Mazda 2 Hybrid meets consumer demand in the [small-car segment] and is a step in our journey to ensure all our cars have some form of electrification by 2030,” a spokesperson for Mazda UK told Autocar.

Despite the change overseas, Mazda Australia has confirmed to CarSauce the Mazda 2 – in its current form – is “safe”.

How long it’s safe for is unknown, with the company yet to announce plans for a new-generation Mazda 2 to replace the current, ageing model.
