A late sales surge has returned the Toyota HiLux to the top of the monthly sales chart.

Combined sales data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) shows the Toyota led its main competitor, the Ford Ranger, with just 90 sales separating the two utes.

The increase in sales for the HiLux comes after CarSauce exclusively reported the model was ending production this month, ahead of the new-generation HiLux expected later this year.

Previous monthly winner, the Toyota RAV4, came in third for April.

The Ford Ranger’s SUV sibling, the Everest, battled it out against the Toyota LandCruiser Prado for fourth and fifth respectively – with just a single Everest sale giving it the edge.

The Isuzu D-Max ute came in sixth, ahead of the Kia Sportage, Toyota Corolla, and the Nissan X-Trail.

Coming in 10th spot is the Mazda CX-5.

While sales of electric SUVs have increased by almost 19 per cent compared with April last year, low-riding electric vehicles – such as hatches, sedans, and wagons – are down 52.6 per cent over the same period.

Tesla sales continue to struggle, with the electric car giant recording just 500 total sales last month – a drop of 62 per cent year-to-date, and a drop of 76 per cent compared to the same month in 2024.
