BYD’s electric supercar – the Yangwang U9 – has added yet another record to its resume, having officially claimed the fastest lap for an electric production car on the infamous Nüburgring Nordschleife. 

Clocking a time of 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds on Germany’s world-famous race track back in August, the Yangwang U9 bested the previous top EV time – which belonged to the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra sedan – by over five seconds. 

This comes after the U9 set the record for the world’s fastest production car, achieving a top speed of 496.22km/h, after it had already claimed the title of the world’s fastest EV. 

Moritz Kranz – a German racing driver who has lapped the Nüburgring nearly 10,000 times during his career – took to the helm of the U9 Xtreme on its record-breaking run. 

The Xtreme – previously badged as the Track Edition – is the track-focused version of the U9, and is limited to a run of just 30 cars. 

Powered by four electric motors, each producing 555kW, the U9 Xtreme has a combined system output of 2,200kW. 

This is significantly more than the standard U9’s 960kW figure. The Xtreme also adopts a 1200V electrical architecture as opposed to the regular U9’s 800V system. 

The Xtreme also gets a redesigned cooling system and a titanium alloy carbon ceramic braking system. It also wears Giti’s GitiSport e·GTR2 PRO semi-slick tyres.

However, despite claiming the quickest electric car lap at the Nüburgring, the U9 Xtreme is yet to conquer the outright record. 

Those honours go to the Mercedes-AMG One, with a time of 6 minutes and 29.09 seconds, with brand factory driver, Maro Engel, behind the wheel.
