An extended-wheelbase version of the Tesla Model Y – badged as the Model Y L – has broken cover in China with seating for six. 

A sales licensing filing submitted to the Ministry of Information and Technology (MIIT) in China revealed details on the Model Y L.  

The wheelbase has grown by 150mm – up from the Model Y’s 2,890mm to 3,040mm for the Model Y L – while the height has also increased by 44mm, up from 1,624mm to 1,668mm. 

With the wheelbase increase, the overall length has increased from 4,790mm to 4,976mm. 

The YL has received a performance upgrade over the Chinese-spec Model Y Long Range AWD – featuring dual-motor all-wheel-drive with a combined system output of 340kW – a 9kW jump. 

The Model Y L was officially confirmed on Tesla’s Weibo account, announcing that the new variant would be launched in China’s autumn. 

Tesla are yet to confirm an Australian release of the Model Y L or indeed a release in any market aside from China. 

The Model Y L being a Chinese market exclusive is not an unlikely outcome, as it is fairly commonplace for long-wheelbase variants to be sold exclusively in China.

The Model Y was the best selling car in China in 2024, and the new extended-wheelbase variant will likely see Tesla’s SUV grow its customer base even further.  

The Tesla Model Y has previously been sold in other markets as a seven-seater, however, this configuration has never been made available in Australia.
