Highway Patrol officers in Melbourne’s south have impounded a rare Mercedes-AMG believed to be worth approximately $1.5 million.

Representatives for Victoria Police declined to provide details to CarSauce about the seizure, however it’s believed the vehicle is a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series P One Edition – one of 275 sold, with only a small handful brought to Australia.

Police allege the driver had a disqualified licence and had alcohol in their system when stopped, prompting the vehicle to be towed.

The AMG GT Black Series P One Edition was initially only offered to customers who had a Mercedes-AMG One on order – a hypercar powered by Formula 1 technology – which suffered multiple delays during its development.

Despite costing approximately $100,000 more than the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series – itself priced from $796,900 before on-road costs in Australia – the vehicle was reportedly created as a consolation for the ongoing delays.

In fact, the vehicle was so exclusive, Mercedes-AMG never announced the model publicly.

Many believed the vehicle could be worth as much as $1.5 million today, given its rarity.

Like the AMG One, the GT Black Series P One Edition can be distinguished by its silver-to-black livery and Mercedes-Benz star pattern.

Under the bonnet, the P One Edition was mechanically identical to the Black Series, with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 making 537kW and 800Nm – allowing the vehicle to hit 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.2 seconds.

According to police, the Mercedes-AMG has been impounded for 30 days.
