A 1985 Holden VK Commodore SS HDT Group A – owned by the late racing legend Peter Brock when new – is back on the market.

Nicknamed the ‘Blue Meanie’, the HDT Group A was #005 of 500, and was sold by Grays Auctions back in May 2021 for $1.14 million (including buyer’s premium) – setting a record for one of the most expensive Australian-made road cars.

Three years later, the V8 Commodore – painted in a blue taken from Mobil Oil’s corporate colours, Brock’s in-era racing sponsor – emerged again on the auction platform Collecting Cars, having travelled less than 2200 kilometres over those three years.

However, the vehicle failed to find a buyer and was passed in at $438,500.

Now, Brock’s Blue Meanie is back up for sale with 88,000km on the clock, and is being sold by the dealership Melbourne Used Vehicles – and at a considerable discount.

Those after a piece of history from the nine-time Bathurst winner can score the HDT Group A Commodore for $799,000 – approximately 30 per cent less than the hammer price four years ago – though it’s not clear whether this is before on-road costs or a drive-away price.

The VK Commodore SS HDT Group A was originally developed as a homologation special for touring car racing – with help from Brock.

It’s believed the 4.9-litre V8 produced around 196kW, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.

It would take another decade before buyers could get their hands on an HSV with more power.

The Blue Meanie also includes a signed logbook and two cassette tapes – including the Midnight Oil album Blue Sky Mine, which includes the track ‘King of the Mountain’.
