A New Subaru WRX Sportswagon Could Come with Hybrid Power as Early as 2026
A new Subaru Levorg, badged as the WRX Sportswagon in Australia is reportedly on the way with hybrid power according to news out of Japan.
An updated Subaru WRX Sportswagon is on-track for a 2026 release according to Best Car.
The Japanese publication reported that a new Subaru Levorg – sold in Australia as the WRX Sportswagon – is on the way, likely as a significant facelift or possibly as the third generation model.
The latter could very well be true should the six-year gap between the Japanese release of the first and second generation Levorg be repeated – released in 2014 and 2020 respectively – with the expected 2026 arrival keeping with the trend of Levorg generations thus far.
In Australia, the WRX Sportswagon is offered with a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine – producing 202kW and 350Nm – paired with Subaru’s Sport Lineartronic CVT.
A 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine is also offered for the Levorg overseas, although this powertrain never made it to Australia.
The updated Levorg is expected to be offered exclusively at first in Japan with the 1.8-litre engine, with the larger displacement 2.4-litre expected to rejoin the range some time after the initial release in the Japanese Autumn of 2026.
Early speculation suggests that the new Levorg – and likely the new WRX Sportswagon should it come to Australia – will also be offered with the same strong hybrid powertrain featured in the latest Subaru Forester.
In the sixth-generation Forester, this powertrain features a 2.5-litre four-cylinder boxer engine paired with an electric motor and a 1.1kWh lithium-ion battery with a combined system output of 145kW.
The new Levorg is set to arrive with a styling refresh, as well as a new set of dimensions, reportedly growing in length and width by 5mm and shrinking in height by 20mm compared to the outgoing model.
Official details on the new Levorg as well as an Australian release of a new WRX Sportswagon are yet to be officially confirmed by Subaru.
