New Front-Wheel Drive MG 4 to Sell Alongside Existing Rear-Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive Models
The new 2026 MG 4 FWD electric hatchback will not replace the existing RWD and AWD models, instead being sold alongside them.
The MG 4 electric hatchback lineup is set to receive a model structure overhaul with the arrival of the second-generation model in Q2 of 2026.
Unveiled in China last month, the new front-wheel drive MG 4 will be considered “a completely different vehicle” according to MG Australia CEO Peter Ciao, complementing the existing rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models rather than replacing them.
The new MG4 – linked to the recently trademarked “MG 4 Urban” badge – will serve as a value-conscious, city driving-focused entry point to the range below the RWD and AWD models.
The RWD and AWD variants will be positioned above the FWD model as more driver-focused offerings with larger battery capacities and further driving ranges.
The 2026 MG 4 is powered by a 120kW and 250Nm electric motor, with electricity coming from either a 43kWh or a 54kWh capacity lithium ion battery, with a claimed driving range of 437km or 530km on the CLTC cycle depending on the battery choice.
The updated rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models will be offered with a single 64kWh battery capacity option, with the 51kWh and 77kWh variants cut from the line-up.
Australian pricing for the updated MG 4 lineup is yet to be officially confirmed, although a price increase is expected for the RWD and AWD variants for 2026.
