A new Australian study commissioned by Mitsubishi Motors Australia reveals that Outlander Plug-In Hybrid EV (PHEV) owners operate their vehicles in electric vehicle (EV) mode 81% of the time.

Electric-only range for the Outlander PHEV is 84km, according to our review of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Exceed Tourer Plug-in.

The research, conducted by Platform One, highlights that owners are effectively reducing their CO2 emissions without the need for additional infrastructure.

Mitsubishi’s continued investment in PHEV technology has seen the Outlander PHEV advance to an electric range of up to 84km, with a combined range exceeding 800km. PHEVs now account for 20% of total Outlander sales, a significant increase from under 5% in previous years. The Eclipse Cross PHEV has also supported sales, with 27% of total Eclipse Cross units sold in 2024 being PHEV models.

Platform One's study also revealed that Mitsubishi PHEV owners regularly charge their vehicles, with 50% of Outlander PHEV owners and 58% of Eclipse Cross PHEV owners charging daily. Most charging takes place at home, with 85% of Outlander and 89% of Eclipse Cross owners using domestic sockets for overnight charging.

The study also indicated that 92% of Mitsubishi PHEV owners agree that using EV mode improves fuel economy, with the majority citing reduced running costs as a key reason for choosing the PHEV. The data supports Mitsubishi's dominance in the Australian PHEV market, holding 43% of the market share.

Mitsubishi PHEV owners are also seen as early adopters of electrified vehicles, with many considering transitioning to fully electric vehicles in the future. Real-world benefits, such as lower running costs and the flexibility of hybrid technology, continue to attract new customers to Mitsubishi’s PHEV models.
