GWM has hinted at the development of a new plug-in-hybrid off-road platform positioned above its current Hi4-T system, after an unrevealed “Super Off-Road” tier appeared during a presentation at the brand’s 2025 Tech Day in Melbourne attended by CarSauce.

During a session led by Chief Engineer Richard Zhu, a pyramid slide outlined the brand’s hybrid hierarchy - from Hi4 Gen 2 (urban SUVs) and Hi4-Z (general off-road), to Hi4-T (strong off-road) - topped by a vehicle under a cover labelled “Please stay tuned.”

Zhu described the top classification as “military-grade vehicles built for the toughest and harshest environments.”

While no additional information was provided, the structure implies GWM is working on a new system designed for greater off-road capability than its existing Hi4-T platform.

The current Hi4-T system, used in models such as the Tank 300, Cannon Alpha PHEV, and upcoming Tank 500 Hi4-T, combines a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission incorporating an electric motor.

The setup produces 300 kW and 750 Nm and is paired with a mechanical four-wheel-drive system featuring low-range gearing and locking differentials on the centre, front, and rear axles.

A 37 kWh battery pack provides up to 120 km of claimed electric-only range (NEDC) and supports sustained power delivery in off-road conditions.

GWM claims the system can generate more than 24,000 Nm of wheel torque, with control software managing torque distribution between the axles to limit wheel slip.

If the new Super Off-Road tier builds on those foundations, it could introduce an evolution of GWM’s Hi4-T platform - potentially aimed at matching or exceeding future electrified rivals such as Toyota’s Land Cruiser PHEV and Jeep’s 4xe systems.

GWM has not confirmed details or timing, ending the teaser with a simple message: “Please stay tuned.”
