The Australian-made Ford Falcon may be dead, but local fans may soon have an opportunity to buy another V8-powered sedan from the Blue Oval.

CarSauce can reveal Ford has registered a trademark for the ‘Mach 4’ nameplate in Australia, with strong evidence suggesting it relates to a four-door version of the iconic Mustang.

In August 2024, industry publication Automotive News reported Ford CEO Jim Farley revealed renderings of a four-door Mustang to dealer representatives at a closed-door conference in Las Vegas.

Two years earlier, Ford released a sketch of a Mustang with a four-door coupe body.

While ‘Mach 4’ was first filed as a trademark in the US in February, as reported by Car and Driver, it was officially registered with Australian authorities just days ago – hinting at plans for the model to join the company’s local line-up.

Unconfirmed reports in recent years suggest Ford has big plans for the Mustang name, with the aim to spin it off into its own sub-brand of performance vehicles – with the Mach E electric SUV the first of several.

It’s understood an off-road Mustang is also in development.

However, as shown in the 2022 sketch, the Mach 4 is believed to be more akin to a four-door coupe, with a sloping roof rather than a traditional ‘three-box’ sedan design.

Regardless, the Mustang Mach 4 could find favour with both US and Australian police departments as Highway Patrol vehicles.

Along with a 2.3-litre turbo-petrol ‘Ecoboost’ four-cylinder engine making 232kW and 475Nm, the Ford Mustang coupe is one of the last sportscars available with a V8 engine – with the 5.0-litre putting out 345kW and 550Nm, with the choice of a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic.
