BYD has reported a new sales achievement in Australia for May 2024, recording 1,914 vehicle registrations.

This figure marks an increase from previous months, setting a new high for the company.

The sales were primarily driven by the Seal sedan, which accounted for 1,002 units.

Other models contributing to the total were the Atto 3 and Dolphin, with 737 and 175 units sold, respectively.

Notably, these figures represent exclusively electric vehicle sales, as the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV, announced recently, has not yet begun deliveries.

This latest result continues BYD's strong performance in 2024, with sales up by 67% over the first five months compared to the same period in the previous year.

Despite this growth, BYD's year-end targets for doubling sales appear ambitious.

In the broader automotive market, electric vehicles saw a 26.8% increase in sales year-to-date.

Electric vehicles made up 8% of the total new vehicle sales in May 2024.

Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid vehicles also showed significant growth, with sales increasing by 118% to 6,099 units for the year so far.

China remains a major supplier of new vehicles to Australia, ranking third after Japan and Thailand and before South Korea, Germany, and the US.

The market for Chinese-made vehicles has grown by 7.9% year-to-date compared to last year.
