Breaking: 2026 BYD ATTO 1 (Seagull) to Become Australia’s Cheapest EV On Sale
BYD confirms ATTO 1 (Seagull/Dolphin Surf) for Australia in 2025, launching as the nation’s most affordable entry-level electric car.
BYD has confirmed that the ATTO 1, known globally as the Seagull, will launch in Australia in November 2025.
Earlier this year, CarSauce attended a BYD media event in Shenzhen where we had the opportunity to drive the ATTO 1 (Seagull), our full video review is below.
The compact hatchback has sold more than one million units across markets such as China and Europe, where it is also called the Dolphin Surf. Designed as a city-focused EV, it will sit below the new ATTO 2 in BYD’s local line-up.
BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins said the model will significantly lower the entry point into the EV market.
“When it comes to the ATTO range, start believing the hype,” he said.
“The ATTO 1 will be Australia’s most affordable EV by some margin, opening the door for even more Australians to get behind the wheel of their own new energy vehicle.”
Globally, the ATTO 1 offers multiple lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery options ranging from 30kWh to 39kWh, with outputs from a 55kW/135Nm front-mounted motor.
In markets such as the UK, a higher-spec 43kWh version produces 115kW and 220Nm. Depending on specification, WLTP-rated range varies from 220km to 321km.
Measuring 3,990mm long and 1,590mm tall, the ATTO 1 fits between a city hatch and a small hatch in size. Despite its compact footprint, it offers a wheelbase of 2,500mm and a 230-litre boot, expanding to around 900 litres with the rear seats folded.
Interior equipment in overseas models includes a 10.1-inch rotating infotainment screen, a 5.0-inch driver display, wireless phone charging, and available wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features such as electrically adjustable seats, memory functions, and 360-degree cameras.
Charging capacity ranges from 6.6kW to 11kW AC and up to 85kW DC depending on battery size.
Overseas specifications also list driver assistance systems including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure assist, and adaptive cruise control.
The ATTO 1 will arrive as part of BYD’s largest Australian expansion to date, alongside the ATTO 2 later in 2025, followed by the SEALION 5 and SEALION 8 in early 2026.
These launches build on the brand’s existing local line-up, which includes the Dolphin, Seal, Shark 6, SEALION 6, SEALION 7, and ATTO 3.
